Lot Essay

For a similar example see Michael Archer, Delftware, London, 1997, p. 85, no. A20. Also see Christie's, London, 17 April 2000, lot 2. See Frank Britton, English Delftware in the Bristol Collection, London, 1982, fig. 2 for a detail of a print by Pierre Lombart, Udini illustrating Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It has been suggested that the fruit depicted on these chargers is actually an orange rather than an apple and can be viewed as a political comment on the House of Orange.
