Depicting a ship under full sail with cresting whales in the foreground, this piece is especially rare with its New Bedford inscription. Situated on the coast just South of Boston, Southeast of Providence and not too far from New York, New Bedford grew to be one of the most important whaling ports in the 19th Century. With British wool-works more commonly found, the present lot would have been made by an American sailor to pass the time at sea.
