Lot Essay

Two vessels named Caracas were depicted several times by Jacobsen between 1884 and 1901 as noted in Herold Sniffen's Antonio Jacobsen - The Checklist, Paintings and Sketches by Antonio N.G. Jacobsen, 1850-1921. According to the records on pages 58 and 59, the steamships were both built by William Cramp & Sons, Co. of Philadelphia and owned by Red "D" Line, based in Wilmington, Delaware.
