Lot Essay

A known labeled Lemuel Churchill chair is held in the Winterthur collection (Montgomery, Charles F., American Furniture, The Federal Period, (New York, 1966), pp. 162-163, fig. 116). The present lot and the labeled chair clearly share the same construction and style most notably in the flaring silhouette of the back and rear legs as well as the refined carving which outlines the arms and front legs.
