D.S. Howard called Dewitt Clinton "...a giant in the political life of New York..." (New York and the China Trade, p. 113.) Hailing from an important Anglo-American family with a distinguished record in the Revolution, Clinton was a New York Assemblyman and then U.S. Senator before becoming Mayor and later a Presidential candidate defeated by James Madison. A platter from the collection of Diane and Norman Bernstein, The Lindens, was sold Sotheby's, New York, 22 January 2006, lot 3. A pair of dishes and covers was sold Christie's, New York, 23 January 2007, lot 187 and an oval dish, lot 188.
