Samuel Townson was apprenticed in 1695. He was a Freeman of the Clockmakers' Company 1702-1738. A walnut longcase by him is illustrated in Brian Loomes, Brass Dial Clocks, Woodbridge, 1998, p. 48, pl. 35.

CASE: caddy top hood with brass-capped columns, concave throat mouldings over cross-banded trunk door with brass lenticle, retail label to inside, cross-banded plinth on bracket feet, restoration to caddy DIAL: 12 in. square brass dial signed on silvered chapter ring 'Sam Townson London', subsidiary seconds, date square and ringed winding holes to the matted centre, blued steel hands (replaced) MOVEMENT: five ring-turned pillars (one latched), anchor escapement, internal countwheel strike and later passing half hour strike on bell; pendulum, brass weights, two winding keys
