Lot Essay

Thomas Cole (1800-1864) is particularly renowned for his finely engraved strut clocks. J.B. Hawkins (Thomas Cole and Victorian Clockmaking, Woodbridge, 1975, pp. 159-165) suggests Cole first conceived the strut clock circa 1845 and that they became the mainstay of his business. Circular examples are unusual. A clock of closely related design sold anonymously, Christie's London, 5 July 2006, lot 34 (£7,200).
