This Roman-medallion form of pier glass, clasped by 'Roman' acanthus foliage, is designed in the George II 'antique' fashion; and relates to a cartouche, celebrating the Art of Architecture, that was invented by the Rome-trained artist William Kent (d. 1748) (J. Vardy, Some Designs of Mr Inigo Jones and Mr William Kent, 1744, frontispiece).
The cresting in the form of a large basket of flowers and fruit, emblemmatic of charity, bears comparison to that of a pair of mirrors in the Volury at Ham Louse, Richmond.
