Each with panelled back centred by a roundel depicting a spread eagle bearing a serpent in its talons, above a solid seat on turned tapering legs, each stamped 'IF'

Provenance
Possibly commissioned around 1800 by the artist Dean Wolstenholme (d.1837) at the time he moved up to London.

Lot Essay

Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Encyclopaedia (1804-6) popularised the French/antique or Grecian fashion of these heraldically-charged cabriolet chairs with their urn-capped pillar legs and triumphal hollow-arched crestings supported by reeded pilasters. Roman virtue is evoked by the tablet backs' japanned medallions of serpent-slaying eagles, the Wolsterholme family crest.
