Lot Essay

From circa 1735-40, early in the artist's career and comparable to another oval portrait from the same period (Salmon, op. cit., p. 98, no. 15). The sitter of the present lot has mistakenly been identified as the printmaker Simon-Charles Miger (1736-1820).
