The attribution to Van Dyck and the identity of the sitter in this portrait have been debated. Most recently, Horst Vey has suggested that the head relates to a figure (second from the left) in the group portrait of magistrates, once installed in the town hall Brussels and now lost. While an oil sketch of that composition exists (op. cit., no. III169), no other preliminary works can be traced.
