Lot Essay

Munnings had previously painted a similar version of this scene entitled A Blank Day, exhibited at the Norwich Art Circle, 1905, no. 22.

Munnings had been elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1899 and most years he submitted the five allotted works per year until 1916. From 1921 until 1934 he became an Associate member and submitted fewer works until his eventual resignation. Watercolor has been a medium associated with plein air painting and Munnings had a lifelong preference for painting this way to achieve the effect of spontaneity and to obtain true color harmony.

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
