These two horses were most likely Munnings' own hunters, the chestnut possibly being his wife's horse, Rufus or Master Munn. He frequently used his own horses as models in pictures of horses at exercise during World War II while based at Withypool. He painted a similar scene of horses in the stable yard entitled The Second Set (sold Christie's, New York, 5 December 2003, lot 117).
