Lot Essay

This is a study for a larger painting exhibited at the Royal Academy 1944, no. 2 entitled Winter Meeting, illustrated in Studio, August 1944 and sold Christie's, London, 5 March 1976, lot 87 (fig. 1).

Hurst Park, at Moulsey Hurst, West Molesey, Surrey was formed as a syndicated club in 1889 with its first fixture held March 19, 1890. Apart from the war years, race meetings were held there until 1962 when the land was sold for housing and the turf was sold to the Royal Ascot racecourse. The park received international attention in June 1913 as the scene for violent suffragette activity and it was later the first course to use photographic finish equipment. The Queen Elizabeth Chase was established in 1949 and was appropriately won the first year by the then Princess Elizabeth's horse Monave'en.

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
