Lot Essay

This is one of two known paintings depicting a fractious pony pulling a cart. The other is entitled The Sound of the Motor Car (Sir Alfred Munnings Museum, Dedham) and thus explains the reason for the pony's behaviour in the present work. Munnings never learned to drive and was often irate upon hearing the sound of motorized engines. Throughout his life, he mourned the changing way of life and the destruction of simple rural traditions.

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
