Lot Essay

Eduard Charlemont studied at the Vienna Academy and was a regular exhibitor at the Salons, winning a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Like his contemporaries Ramberg and Becker, Charlemont found inspiration for his paintings of intimate interiors in the work of the 17th-century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
