A Lacquered-Wood Box for Poem Cards (Tanzakubako)
Meiji Period (late 19th century), signed Taishin [Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903)]
Slender and rectangular to accommodate the paper cards to be inscribed with poems, the box of polished wood with swirling wood grain and lacquered on the lid with gold and silver pine needles and with two sprays of nandina, the berries of gold takamakie-e and the leaves of gold, silver, black and orange takamaki-e and inlaid mother-of-pearl, signed on underside of lid in gold lacquer Taishin
