Muromachi period (16th century), signed Bizen Kuni [No] Ju Osafune Katsu[mitsu]
Sugata: [configuration]: Even width hon-zukuri, iori-mune, somewhat high shinogi, fumbari with sakizori curve, chu-gissaki
Kitae: [forging pattern]: Fine ko-itame with ji-nie overall, ji-utsuri, and much ara-nie
Hamon [tempering pattern]: Midareba with large and violent variations particularly in the lower part of the blade, sunagashi, irregular niju-ba, much tobi-yaki, deep return with mune-yaki having many kinsuji along much of the blade and areas of very large nie
Boshi [tip]: Ichimai boshi with kinsuji on omote
Nakago [tang]: Suriage with three mekugi-ana, the lower of which filled with lead, katte-sagari file marks, kuri-jiri
Habaki [collar]: Single silver with incised inscription ichigo mushi (no slightest trace of self)
Nagasa [length of blade]: 62.1cm
Koshirae [mounting]: Uchigatana mounting with black lacquered scabbard, copper nanako kojiri, mokko yamagane tsuba with large wavy-edged hitsuana, two coiled dragon roundels on each side, the whole sukuidashi-bori, iron fuchigashira with carved bands of nanako and gold ito zogan linked-key design, shakudo menuki of sets of three triple quadrant mon

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as a Hozon token (Sword worthy of preservation) no. 379343 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), 2008.3.19

Lot Essay

Although slightly suriage (cut-down) so that the second character "mitsu" of Katsumitsu is missing, the style of the calligraphy, the midare-ba, tobiyaki and long kaeri suggest the work of Jirozaemon [no] jo Katsumitsu.
