CASE: hood with fretwork panel, probably replaced spiral-twist columns and conforming replaced half columns to rear slats, trunk door with moulded frame and lenticle, restorations to side veneers, on later bun feet DIAL: 11 in. square brass dial signed along lower edge 'Christop Gould Londini fecit', engraving to the quarter positions, cherub mask and foliate spandrels to silvered chapter ring, matted centre with engraved central rosette, engraving around the date square, ringed winding holes, with seconds ring and blued steel hands (minute replaced) MOVEMENT: five ringed pillars, anchor escapement and internal rack strike on bell, re-instated bolt-and-shutter maintaining power; two brass weights, pendulum, crank key, case key

Lot Essay

Christopher Gould was a well regarded maker of watches and clocks for both the domestic and export markets. He was made Free of the Clockmakers' Company in April 1682 and Beadle in September 1713, a post he held until his death in 1718. Despite being a prolific and competent maker, Gould was declared bankrupt in 1706 and received a regular pension from the Clockmakers' Company which was passed to his widow after his death.
