Although born in Wujiang, Ye Yong worked for most of his life in Shanghai as a painter. He was friends with and collaborated on pictures together with Ren Xun (1835-1893). A delicately depicted lady set in a romantic garden setting, as seen here, is typical for Ye Yong's work. In this painting, Ye Yong transcribed a poem that he credits to Su Shi (1036-1101) and said that he used the painting style of Tang Yin (1470-1523). In fact, the poem that Ye Yong wrote was composed by Su Shi's student Qin Guan (1049-1100).
