Lot Essay

This large plaque, which could be either a tiger or a kuei dragon, is similar to one of slightly smaller size (4 3/8 in.), described as a tiger, in the Sonnenschein Collection illustrated by A. Salmony, Carved Jade of Ancient China, Berkeley, California, 1938, pl. XIV (2). The style of carving is very similar, as is the jade.
