This rare cup is related to another of a boy holding the stem of a large lotus leaf with a crab and water grasses on its interior in the Marcel Lorber Collection, Israel Museum, Jerusalem, illustrated by J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, London, 1999, p. 73, fig. 39. The author notes, p. 74, that this motif is "well-known in Chinese art but rarely seen in three-dimensional pieces." One of the reasons for the popularity of the theme is the wish that it conveys, that of giving birth to many sons.
