Lot Essay

Compare the ivory wrist rest carved with the Eighteen Luohans in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji; Zhumu yajiaoqi, vol. 11, Shanghai, 1996, p. 86, no. 100, and the example in the Victoria and Albert Museum illustrated in Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, London, 1984, p. 138, no. 151. See, also, the similarly carved ivory wrist rest, but depicting scenes from the novel San Guo Ji (The Book of the Three Kingdoms), included in the exhibition, Selected Ivory Carvings from the Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese Ivories Trust, Phillips, London, 9-20 November 1999, no. 17.
