Lot Essay

The tapering faceted shape of this vase is similar to that of a small parcel-gilt bronze incense tool vase raised on a base, dated 18th century, included in the exhibition, Oriental Works of Art and Miniatures, Gerard Hawthorn Ltd., London, Winter 2007, no. 4. Ivory incense tool holders were also made in other shapes, as can be seen in two examples illustrated in Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1990, nos. 117 and 118, dated Shunzhi/Kangxi (1644-1722).
