"Poets and philosophers have, in all ages, recognized in Pearls the emblems most fitted to represent whatever they regarded as of surpassing purity, or of exceeding worth."
- Edwin W. Streeter, "Pearls and Pearling Life"

Throughout history, pearls have enjoyed a place among the most coveted of gemstones. The Asian tribes, the Persians and the Egyptians were the first peoples documented to develop an admiration for these gems due to their proximity to the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Pearls have been known in Europe since the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Their popularity can be documented in numerous paintings of the Hapsburgs, the Valois, the Medicis, the Borgias, the Tudors and the Stuarts. This drop pearl is a beautiful example of the type that has been coveted throughout the centuries by such famed historical figures as Elizabeth I, Catherine de Medici and Marie Antoinette. Its lovely form, excellent clarity and orient place it in the category of pearls rarely seen in today's salerooms. Another fine, and equally rare example was auctioned in these rooms in May of 1995 (lot 463, The Magnificent Jewels of Vera Hue-Williams).
