Lot Essay

Sir William Chambers published designs for furniture in a similar style to the present chairs, in Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, etc., 1757 (E. White, Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, p. 133). Chambers writes: 'The moveables of the Saloon consist of Chairs, Stools and Tables, made sometimes of rose-wood, ebony, or lacquered work, and sometimes of Bamboo only, which is cheap, and nevertheless very neat.'
