In 1807, Teerlink was one of the élève pensionnaires of King Louis Napoleon, studying for a over a year in Paris under Jaques Louis David before moving to Rome in 1808. Together with Hendrik Voogd and Anthonie Sminck Pitloo, he belonged to the most successful early 19th century painters of Italianate landscapes, serving an international clientele.
