CIRCA 1860, WITH FRENCH EXPORT MARKS AND INDISTINCT MAKER'S MARK

Circular and with broad rim pierced and cast with Venus masks, drapery scrolls and foliage and set with six enamel medallions of nude female figures, the centre with a roundel depicting the Goddess Venus within a circular cartouche and enamelled border of Venus masks and grotesque ornament, marked on border
35 cm (13¾ in) diam.

Lot Essay

In the style of the the French designer Meyer, this dish imitates Limoges enamel work of the Renaissance. It illustrates the rise of antiquerian interest in works of art from Renaissance which occurred at the 19th century.
