Calligrapher's diploma, comprising sura al-fath, Arabic manuscript on paper, 5ff. plus 3 fly-leaves, each folio with 10ll. of black naskh, gold verse roundels, text panels outlined in gold, catchwords, opening folio with gold and polychrome floral illumination, colophon with name of the master, scribe and the date, areas of slight staining, in original brown morocco with gold speckled doublures

Lot Essay

Born in 1687, Mehmed Rasim Efendi (d. 1755) studied calligraphy under the supervision of the famous court calligrapher Sayyid 'Abdullah Efendi of Yedikule. He got his diploma in six different styles of calligraphy and gained fame particularly for his masterly works in thulth and naskh. He was supported by Sultan Ahmed III (r.1703-1730) who also practiced calligraphy and was later appointed court calligrapher in 1737 (Sevket Rado, Turk Hattatlari, Istanbul, 1980). During the course of his life he is said to have trained approximately a thousand calligraphers, of whom Feyzullah Efendi was one (M. Ugur Derman, Letters in Gold, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1998, p. 82).
