Having completed an ambitious tour of North India, between 1789 and 1791, Thomas Daniell and his nephew William embarked on a tour of the South, in 1792. This landscape is one of several pictures executed by Thomas Daniell of the Tinnevelly District, which was formed by the East India Company in 1790 and falls in present day Tamil Nadu Sate. The region has a diverse geography, incorporating the Sahyadri mountains and Tamirabarani river. Choultries, which feature in this painting, are south Indian rest houses, open on all sides with pillars supporting a roof, often attached to a temple. A painting of The Temple at Tirukalikundran, Tinnevelly District was sold in these Rooms in September 2005 for £130,000.
