NORTH INDIA, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The watered steel tapering single-edged blade damascened with gold with a panel of floral sprays near the hilt, a thick silvered band above, the hilt with slightly flattened spine terminating in a fine inset rock crystal lion's head, the mane carved, a stylised chain running from the collar around the neck, the eyes inset with coloured stones, a foiled beryl in the centre of its forehead, the ruby tongue free to loll around in the mouth, the light red velvet-covered wooden sheath with gilt-copper mounts each engraved with floral lattice designs below the pierced cusped border, ball finial
