Philippe-Joseph Brocard first established himself as a restorer of glass, an occupation which enabled him to approach in detail the various techniques used in glassmaking. His first exhibition of enamelled glass, presented at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867, was a success. Brocard continued to exhibit at international fairs and won a first prize at the Exposition universelle in Paris in 1878.
He was the first to revive this technique of large glass vessels with enamelled surface decoration copying Mamluk originals. Its popularity meant that he was copied in Paris by other artists, including Emile Gall who developed the style further.
