Of rectangular form, the surface with moulded decoration, the main register depicting a mounted hunter with leashed lion facing a charging elephant against a ground of scrolls and floral sprays reserved against a golden brown lustre ground, a minor band of reciprocating scrolls below and a wider register with birds flanking a mythical beast surrounded by further floral sprays above, signature of Kato Takuo in the lower right hand corner, in fitted wooden box

Kato Takuo (1917-2004) was a Ningen-Kokuho, a Japanese 'Living National Treasure'. Born into a family of pottery masters dating back to the late Edo period, he studied ceramic art under his father Kobe Kato and in 1965 travelled to Finland to continue his studies. There he concentrated on Persian ceramics found at ancient Iranian kiln sites. He became a leading figure in the restoration of Persian lusterware. In 1991 he won an award from the Japanese Ceramic Society and in 1995 became an 'Important Intangible Cultural Asset' for his three-colour techniques. He is famous for recreating lusterwares as well as blue-glazed and three-coloured wares.
