The pencil inscription ARBUTHNOT on the back seatrail of this daybed could refer to a provenance from two different families. An Irish branch with four brothers, most notably Charles Arbuthnot (1767-1850) a confidante of the Duke of Wellington, as well as General Sir Thomas and General Sir Robert Arbuthnot and Bishop Alexander Arbuthnot could have all been potential owners. The second Arbuthnot family may indicate Sir William Arbuthnot (1766-1829), 1st Baronet and Lord Provost of Edinburgh or his son Keith, 2nd Bt. (1801-73) as owners.
