Lot Essay

Ernest Gutzwiller (1891-1976), was a Swiss-born banker and finiancier who assembled a renowned collection in his Paris residence, l'Hotel de Beauharnais. Its noted neo-classical and Egyptian revival interiors were designed by Percier and Fontaine in the early 19th century and formed the backdrop for Gutzwiller's Old Master paintings as well as his eighteenth and nineteenth century furniture and objects.
