Each with bowed front and four graduated drawers, one with inside of top drawer inscribed J Dickson in red script, the other with outer right side of top drawer inscribed T Martin and upper edge stamped GILLOWS.LANCASTER, one with replaced brasses

Lot Essay

Both chests bear the pencil inscriptions of Gillow workmen. 'J Dickson' may be James Dixon who worked at Gillows in Lancaster from the 1770s and is recorded making a mahogany chest of drawers in 1796. Thomas Martin was apprenticed in Lancaster and London from 1796.
