Lot Essay

A closely related sketch by Gillows with a drapery swag across four vertical splats and dated 1790 is illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, vol. I, Suffolk, 2008, pl. 156. A set of chairs of almost identical design was made by Gillows for Walter H. Fawkes of Farnley Hall, Yorkshire, in 1792 (op cit, pl.159).
