Lot Essay

This enormous work was produced near the end of Renoleau's life and harkens back to his earlier works from the late 19th century, re-embracing his beginings and a style he had abandoned back at the turn of the century. For another large lobster dish by Renoleau in the same spirit and with the same striated turquoise ground, circa 1887, see M. Katz and R. Lehr, Palissy Ware, London, 1996, p. 178, no. 239.
