At the time of cataloguing, the present example is the only equestrian weight extant of this composition.
There are five known Baccarat garlanded equestrian weights. Three of them are in Museum collections; including two in the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum and one at the Corning Museum of Glass. The two weights in private collections were both offered at auction in the 1990's; see The Property of the New-York Historical Society, Sotheby's, New York, 18 January 1995, lot 153; and the Homer Perkins Collection, Christie's, New York, 23 September 1998, lot 180.
The technique of engraving a thin triple overlay panel and enclosing the work in glass is reminiscent of the style and techniques associated with Karl Pfohl and Friedrich Egermann of Bohemia. In the 1850's Baccarat and Saint Louis were both known to have hired artisans from this region including Pfohl. Their influence, the fashion à la Bohême, is evident at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1867.
