Signed in a pink star above the medallion.

An almost identical but slightly faded rug was sold in these Rooms, 14 October 2004, lot 77. In that example the signature was read as Hajji Mir 'Ali Kirmani, but the inscription was the same as the present example and thus the "Mir" should have been read "Qamar".

This carpet was woven in commemoration of the end of the first world war. It was reported of the previous carpet that originally it was to have been presented through the British Embassy in Tehran as a Royal Gift to His Majesty King George V, who is depicted alongside Queen Mary beneath the words "War Eclipse". Each depicted with their National flag, the eleven portraits surrounding the central battle scene account for the leading figures of both the Central Powers and the Allied Forces.
