Lot Essay

The wool used for this rug is the same very soft wool that was used for the best large early carpets such as that in lot 136. The border in this rug is also a very old one, found in North West Persian carpets of around 1800. It is also most unusual to find the striped ends completely executed in pile rather than flatweave. All these points serve to indicate that this was a special commission, and could be even earlier than 1870.
