This finely woven and beautifully drawn carpet is one of a small group associated with the weaver Hajji Baba Ganjeh. A silk carpet signed by him was sold in these Rooms, 1 May 2003, lot 50. Two signed wool carpets were in our New York saleroom on 13 December 2000, lots 100 and 164, while a third, similar in composition to the present rug, was there 9 June 2009, lot 46. He tends also to use colours, particularly a red, that is associated more with Kirman than Tabriz. One rug signed with this name even has a Kirman design, finish, and style of signature cartouche, indicating a Kirman attribution (sold in these Rooms, 17 October 1996, lot 598). It is very possible that he began his career in Kirman and then moved to Tabriz. An unsigned carpet very similar to the present example was in these Rooms, 1 November 1995, lot 51.
