Two faces, one fully frontal, the other seen from profile, are shown in close up, as if viewed through a telescope. Extreme light bleaches the faces, flattening the features. Bodies, gestures, all recognizable carriers of meaning, have been cropped out. The first figure stares blankly in the direction of the viewer, but towards the middle distance. The second figure stares intently at the first.
On the head of the frontal figure is a hat of the type usually worn by children and on it a cryptic design of a serpent hieroglyph with three dots above, recalling those of certain Arabic letters. Behind the two faces, the wall is covered with folk decoration, including a crude African figure and almost Aztec-like abstracted patterns. Communication, or lack thereof between the figures, between figures and viewer and an indecipherable code on the wall behind together create a strange and unnerving juxtaposition.
