A FINE PAIR OF DUTCH BRONZE SALUTING CANNON BY CORNELIS OUDEROGGE, ROTTERDAM
Circa 1646
Each with heavy tapering barrel cast with raised fillets and astragals, with bands of foliage in low relief, a pair of naturalistic dolphin handles, a coat-of-arms in a baroque cartouche over the date 1646 on a ribbon on the first reinforce, and each signed C Ouderogge fecit Rotterdam in miniscules on the base ring: each on a 19th century iron mounted wooden carriage

Cornelis Ouderogge (1599-1672) and his brother Dirk (after 1600-1649) continued the Rotterdam iron foundry of their father Jan Cornelisz. Ouderogge (1573/4-1625) after his death, producing cannons and church bells. Cornelis is known to have made at least fourteen cannons dated between 1639 and 1671, though no others of 1646 seem to have been preserved (see E. Wiersum, 'De geschut- en klokkengietersfamilie Ouderogge' in Oud-Holland, XXXI, no. 2, 1924). Some of his cannons were still in use during the 19th Century to defend the walls of the city of Rotterdam.
