Lot Essay

In January 1912, Troubetzkoy was crossing the Atlantic on the RMS Olympic en route to exhibitions of his work in Chicago and St. Louis. Also on board was a twelve-year-old girl, Margaret Stewart, returning home to Vancouver after two years attending school in England. The girl charmed the passengers, including the sculptor, who asked her to sit for him. By the end of the voyage, a wax bust had been completed and was on display. The January 18, 1912 edition of the New York Herald reports that, upon disembarking, Miss Stewart declared that Prince Troubetzkoy was "her Prince and the most wonderful in the world."
