Lot Essay

The extraordinary high quality of the weaving of this shawl, along with the quality of the design are reminiscent of the work of Charles Berrus, the French shawl designer par excellence. Berrus exhibited at all the Expositions Universelles to great acclaim. The architectural motifs and the outer border can be compared to shawl designs illustrated by Monique Levy Strauss in The Cashmere Shawl, pages 161-2.
