Lot Essay

A preparatory drawing for the left-hand angel in this composition is in the Accademia, Venice (inv. no. 723; see Hugh Brigstocke, Procaccini in America, London and New York, 2002, p. 21, pl. 35, and Nancy Ward Neilson, Giulio Cesare Procaccini disegnatore, Busto Arsizio, 2004, p. 97, no. 50, fig. 74). Another version of the upper part of this composition, inferior in quality and almost certainly an oval-shaped copy after the present work, was sold at Sotheby's, London, 8 July 1992, lot 95, as North Italian School, early 17th century (now Milan, private collection; see Nancy Ward Neilson, op. cit., p. 97, under no. 50).
