Lot Essay

The cover of this watch is set with an old-cut diamond of approx. 0.40 - 0.60 carats.

Constantaras Frères were the jewellers of his Majesty the Sultan, active in Constantinople in the late 19th/early 20th century. Based on the engraved Egyptian crown and seal to the inside of the watch, it can be assumed that it was presented by the Sultan to a member of the Royal Egyptian family.

The enamel miniatures depict views of the Sultan Ahmet or Blue Mosque and the Santa Sofia or Hagia Sophia as seen from Uskudar, situated on the Asian side of the Bosphorus in Constantinople or Istanbul.

The Ottomans were famous for their affection for flowers and had been growing the Orient's most beautiful flowers and bushes in the gardens of Constantinople for many centuries, notably the "Single Red Peony of Constantinople" or paeonia peregrina.
