COLONNA, Fabio (1567-1650). Phytobasanos [in Greek] cui accessit vita Fabi et Lynceorum notitia adnotationesque in phytobasanon [in Greek] Iano Planco auctore. Florence: I.P. Aere & P.C. Viviani, 1744. 4° (283 x 215mm). Engraved device on title, 38 engraved plates (title browned and frayed at edges, worming in outer and inner blank margins, stitching split). Contemporary red mottled boards, uncut (rubbed and bumped).
Second edition, expanded from the first published in 1592. The images, which are some of the first of plants executed in pure etching, 'have considerable charm, and the informality that is characteristic of that medium. Moreover, they are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown... The original drawings... came to light in Naples during the nineteenth century; it is believed that Colonna made them himself, and was his own engraver' (Blunt & Stearn).
