CROWFOOT, Dorothy Mary (1910-1994), Charles W. BUNN, Barbara W. ROGERS-LOW and Anne TURNER-JONES. 'The X-Ray Crystallographic Investigation of the Structure of Penicillin' offprint from: The Chemistry of Penicillin, edited by Hans T. Clarke, John R. Johnson and Sir Robert Robinson, pp.310-67. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1949. 4° (274 x 200mm). 4pp. of plates, numerous text-figs. Original printed wrappers, stapled (covers very lightly soiled, staples rusting, hole-punched to spine). Provenance: Barbara Rogers-Low (co-authorial presentation inscription to upper wrapper dated 1949 to:) -- J.D. Dunitz (serial number ink stamp to upper wrapper). THE ONLY DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF PENICILLIN. Working at ICI's Northwich laboratories from 1944-45, 'they calculated the complete three-dimensional structure on a Hollerith punched card calculator, one of the earliest examples of crystallographic computing. News of the success gradually leaked out into the crystallographic community: what had begun as wartime secrecy continued after VE-day as commercial secrecy to protect the interests of the US firms who had undertaken the mass production of the drug, and the penicillin structure was not formally published until 1949' (ODNB). Together with 7 other offprints by Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, THE ONLY BRITISH WOMAN SCIENTIST TO WIN A NOBEL PRIZE (Chemistry, 1964), including her pioneering papers on the application of X-ray crystallography to complex chemical and biological molecules, and her ground-breaking work on the chemical structure of vitamin B12.
